Early Childhood Educator in Edmonton, Alberta

I completed my teacher training. I had practical experience teaching a grade 6 and a grade two class. I worked for and co-directed an after school care program for a number of years while I was in University. In the summers I have worked as a nanny. In my first year of university I volunteered as a study buddy in an elementary class for students with behavioural challenges. I completed my advanced field experience at an Alberta accredited international school in Macao, China. The grade two class that I was teaching had a number of students with behavioural challenges and many of the students in my class were English Language Learners. This experience gave me opportunities to adapt my teaching strategies in response to the needs of my learners. When communicating with students, I strive to use appropriate language and vocabulary to suit the needs of my learners. During the course of my field placements, I was able to recognize when it was necessary to simplify the language I used in the classroom to a level more appropriate for the students. Before I entered the education program at the University of Alberta, I co-directed an after school program in Edmonton. I was responsible for completing administrative tasks such as completing budgets/expenses, making schedules, and ensuring that our program was following Alberta childcare licensing standards. In this position, I needed to be able to be creative in order to keep students engaged in positive play. Finally, in my first year of university I volunteered as a study buddy in an elementary behaviour disorder class. My responsibilities included performing some guided reading activities with an autistic student who had low verbal skills and assisting other students in the class with their school work.
