After I graduated from the ECE program at Ryerson, I took some time off to work at Ryerson Early Learning Center. Initially, I worked in the Full Day Kindergarten Program, specifically with children with autism, and ADHD. I worked collaboratively with other members of the teaching team to create individual education plans, assistive tools, promote positive behaviour and coping skills, as well as adapt schedules and curriculum to fit the unique needs of each child. I was then offered a contract position as a Preschool teacher, and had the opportunity to program plan based on developmental, and age-appropriate needs for 16 children. I had the opportunity to adapt the physical environment, and programming for a child who lived with epilepsy. I worked closely with his family, and occupational therapist to provide the best possible care, and learning space for him that was safe, and inclusive. I spent time contributing to creating a caring class environment, and teaching the preschoolers how to care for, and value one another through inclusive pedagogy. In my current job working at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Nursery School, i have the rewarding experience working with children with a wide range of special needs. Working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, I develop Individual Education Plans for each child, and adapt and modify activities and experiences so that each child feels supported, engaged, and can participate to their fullest potential. My most recent experience working with children with special needs is through Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital's respite march break camp as a one-to-one support worker. Through this experience, i gained more hands on experience, working directly with children with complex care needs, and being responsible for their engagement, well-being, and safety.
