Early Childhood Educator in Oakville, Ontario

I am a recent graduate in Early Childhood Education from Sheridan College. I originally come from India where I started working with children and realized that I had a lot of questions. In an attempt to better my own understanding of children, I decided to go back to school to study early childhood education. I have always been interested in creative arts and this is where my earliest experiences of working with children came from. I see the various arts as building blocks in the development of the whole child. I now work towards building an environment where each child chooses his/her creative expression and has the opportunity to express freely. Learning from Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligence, I aim at providing an environment rich with diverse learning opportunities. As an ECE, I see that all children are naturally curious and willing to learn and my goal in the classroom is to be to able remove any obstacles from the environment that would hinder a child’s play and his learning. The four foundations of learning cited in How Does Learning Happen form the basis of my practice. The key focus of my practice is to create an environment where each child belongs and feels truly accepted. It is only after each child feels truly loved and included will the child be able to explore, play and learn. I see it as a privilege to be able to share a part in the lives of children. Currently I work with an agency that provides ECEs to various child care centres on call. As a result, I have got an opportunity to work with different age groups, different philosophies and environments at the same time. Also, I get to implement many spontaneous activities each day. For my field placements, I worked in two kindergarten classrooms in the Halton District School Board and a preschool classroom in a Childcare in Oakville. My personal philosophy is greatly influenced by Malaguzzi who summed up the image of the child and the role of the educator in a single sentence “Our task is to help children communicate with the world using all their potential, strength and languages and to overcome any obstacle presented by our culture”.
