Miles Nadal JCC (Toronto), seeks a Director, Early Childhood Education passionate about children, a strong leader, committed to Reggio-inspired, Learn Through Play curriculum. Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director, the DECE is responsible for the strategic direction and operational management of the MNjcc’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) department. The DECE leads the managerial heads from the Libbie Cowan Childcare Centre, Thomas & Marjorie Schwartz Preschool, and MNjcc Afterschool/School’s Out programs, with the assistance of strong administrative support. The DECE builds a community of educators, children and families, and works collaboratively with our other JCC departments and partner organizations to support the well-being of children and families.    The MNjcc has welcomed children and their families for 60 years.  Our current ECE department population includes 100 children ages 18 months – 5 years, and up to 135 children in our elementary school age Afterschool programs. These programs are licensed through the Ontario Ministry of Education. They are supplemented across the Centre by two on-site schools, children’s aquatics and fitness programs, and a 25-year-old Suzuki music program.   The DECE is a key member of the Senior Team and advises staff and lay leaders on all matters of children’s education, safety, family relations and relevant communication for the entire JCC.   KEY RESPONSIBILITIES     Vision, curriculum and philosophy:  Ensure that the curriculum reflects the organization’s commitment to excellence in Early Childhood Education.  Lead and drive the integration of successful educational philosophies into the curriculum with a focus on Reggio learn Through Play/Child-Directed practices.    Ensure that the needs of our early childhood family community are represented in agency-wide strategic discussion, including J mission and vision.  Values: Early Childhood Education is grounded in accessibility and diversity. We welcome children of all backgrounds and abilities.   Embrace and support diversity and acceptance for children, families and staff.   Integrate Jewish and universal values into the programs.  With a positive mindset and expertise in child development, coordinate teachers, parents and if necessary, other diagnostic professionals to respond to specific student issues and behaviours.   Team of Educators to support the vision: Build, train, support and grow team of educators to deliver an excellent educational experience in all ECE programs for children and their families.   Oversee the hiring and training of all staff related to ECE programs, and ensure their regular supervision and annual evaluation in conjunction with the department heads.  Develop and execute a staff retention plan, including employee appreciation and recognition programs, as well as a professional development plan including PD days and outside opportunities and conferences.  Identify strategies for recruitment and leadership development to build a staffing pipeline and mentor the leaders of the future       Service Excellence:    Ensure that operations meet or exceed all relevant operational guidelines.  Ensure compliance with the Ministry of Education (Ontario) licensing guidelines to ensure standards are met or exceeded, including preparation for site visits, renewals, working with facilities, additional licensing of rooms, annual reports, emergency plans and training.    Ensure the maintenance of all Toronto Public Health standards and reporting.  Ensure the parent and faculty handbooks are current, relevant, and consistent with Licensing Requirements and Organization policy.  Working with the Executive Director, actively engage with key lay leaders to identify strengths and opportunities for the future, to strengthen ECE programs and services.    Community Building: The DECE is the public face of Early Childhood Education, builds a nurturing community of staff, parents and children, and leads partner relations with on-site schools and outside organizations that will enhance the family journey at the J.   Establish and nurture positive open communication with children and families, and ensure mechanisms to stay current to the individual experiences of the children.  Develop opportunities for parent/family education, advocacy for children’s development and positive mental health, and multi-generational engagement  Children as a key pillar of the J and builders of society: Work closely with all child, youth and camp departments regarding transition of preschoolers to elementary-aged programs to encourage engagement and retention in their J journey.  A community journey for all; an inclusive Jewish journey. Understand the crucial role JCCs have to play as a central touchstone for families who seek a diverse Jewish journey, choose to connect in a secular fashion, and may be seeking a gateway to further engagement.   Together with Department Heads, plan and implement annual school events including but not limited to Chanukah, Purim, Passover, Meet and Greet/Pot luck with Parents, Family Shabbats, Gallery Show, etc.  Financial Sustainability and Planning:  Develop and closely monitor ECE department budgets  Closely monitor enrolment and staffing models  Ensure professional and efficient management of admission inquiries, tours, and enrollment.  Create business plans for sustainability and growth   Work closely with Marketing and Fundraising/Development to develop year-round content to promote and sustain the programs, clearly communicate school philosophy and culture, and contribute where appropriate to grant proposals to support growth.  A positive, contributing member of the MNjcc Senior Team:   Build positive staff morale  Support the overall mission of the JCC.  Assist with agency-wide JCC special events.  Attend and participate in JCC staff meetings as required.  Maintain and enforce agency policies and procedures.  Provide excellent customer service.  Perform work after hours as needed to meet applicable deadlines, family events or scheduling needs.  Other duties as assigned.  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:    Must Have  Meets or exceeds Ontario Ministry of Education requirements to be considered a Director Registered Early Childhood Educator or ability to receive Ministry of Education Director approval Minimum of 3 years teaching experience Minimum 3-5 years managerial experience in a leadership/supervisory role in an early childhood program or related field Familiarity with values, principles and philosophies of Reggio Emilia, Learn Through Play and Child-Directed learning. Thorough understanding of the Ontario Child and Early Years Act, with ability to write policies mandated by Toronto Public Health, and Ministry of Education, others as required   Ability to think outside the box to grow and develop ECE programs  Demonstrated effectiveness in program administration, planning, and coordination   Exceptional interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to communicate and interact effectively with parents, children and staff  Strong managerial skills including the ability to foster camaraderie, cooperation, and teamwork  Excellent oral and written English communication skills  Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and ability to master new software systems  Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously  First Aid/CPR certified  Up-to-date vulnerable screening check from their living community     Preferred  Bachelor or Master Degree in related field  Additional certifications relating to children including but not limited to Reggio certification, Special Education, Child development and psychology  Knowledge of Jewish culture, traditions and practice or strong willingness to learn  Experience with elementary school age and/or afterschool programming   Experience in non-profit work environment  Comfortable with social media Salary range is $80,000 -... plus benefits, based on qualifications and experience.  This is a year-round position, with excellent medical/dental, sick leave and vacation benefits and fitness club membership.  Expected Start Date: On or before June 1.    TO APPLY : [email protected] Interested applicants should submit cover letter and CV to [email protected]  with the subject header “Director of Early Childhood Education”.  Application deadline: February 12, 2021  Please note only candidates selected for interviews will be contacted and that interviews may begin before the deadline.   Alternate Formats and Accommodation [email protected] The MNjcc is committed to providing an accessible employment environment.
