Early Childhood Educator in Gatineau, Quebec

As an early childhood educator, I have worked with many age groups. I have worked with infants in permanent and respite care. I have worked with preschoolers, kinders, and school-agers in full time settings. I believe my educational background having obtained both a diploma in Early childhood Education from Algonquin College and an honors bachelors in Child Studies from Carleton University gives me a balanced point of view when it comes to working with children. I value balancing the importance of emergent, play based learning with a deep understanding of children’s development and the social forces that impacts children’s learning. I am extremely passionate about collecting and sharing community resources with the children, families, and educators I work with. I believe this is a vital role of an educator. Furthermore, I am knowledgeable about natural consequence based behaviour management and I continue to develop my skills in this area through developing and implementing abstract and concrete practices. I have a background in teaching instrumental and vocal music which always inspires me to bring the arts to the forefront of my curriculum planning. Finally, my experiences in management roles make me eager to take on leadership roles in childcare centers. I have been so fortunate to work with and be inspired by so many wonderful children with exceptionalities. My experiences in this area began when I taught instrumental music to gifted children. Too often, gifted children and their families are not extended the support they need to thrive, and I have grown passionate in advocating for these families. I went on to continue volunteering to teach music to terminally ill children which taught me so much about the vital role of communication when working with families trying to balance life when unfathomable challenges face their families. I have also worked with children who have speech exceptionalities such as speech apraxia and through these experiences I was grateful to work with teams that included experts in linguistics. I have also worked with children with FAS and developed strong skills in documentation to help communicate progress with families. In the past, I have also worked with many wonderful children who fall under the autistic spectrum. To increase my understanding in this area, I was fortunate enough to take a limited honours seminar course specialized in developing a greater understanding of autism under the supervision of Dr. Shelly Parlow. While I have many experiences working with children with exceptionalities, I believe it is crucial to see this as an area of knowledge that will always be a priority to continue to professionally develop through education and practical experiences.
